This podcast episode presents insights from the article “A non-intrusive iterative generalized finite element method for multiscale coupling of 3-D solid and shell models” (Li, Avecillas-León, Shauer & Duarte, 2022). The paper introduces a non-intrusive multiscale framework (IGL-GFEMgl) that couples a global shell model, a 3-D mesoscale solid model, and refined 3-D local models using an iterative global–local (IGL) algorithm together with Generalized Finite Element global–local enrichments (GFEMgl). The methodology exchanges only nodal quantities between scales (so commercial codes can solve the shell/global problem while an in-house GFEM solver handles mesoscale/local problems), uses compatible shell–solid meshes and shell↔solid conversion rules, and adopts a staggered solution strategy with dynamic (Aitken) relaxation to ensure convergence.
Through three increasingly challenging examples (a fractured cantilever plate, a welded T-joint with a crack, and crack propagation with branching), the authors show the IGL-GFEMgl accurately captures global response and localized 3-D effects (stress singularities and SIFs) while using much smaller mesoscale/local models than a full 3-D DGFEA reference. The paper documents convergence behavior (highlighting the need for relaxation), reports low relative errors in displacements and SIFs versus reference solutions, and emphasizes the practical advantages of a non-intrusive workflow that reduces modeling effort while enabling high-fidelity local 3-D analysis coupled to efficient shell-scale simulations.
