This remarkable book analyses the single line of BASIC code, looking at how the individual instructions work, how mazes and patterns have played a part in art and culture, and how the Commodore 64 produces the maze-like output. There are variations and ports of the program to other machines and programming languages, and plenty of illustrations and example code. It is a mix of geeky language and deep philosophy.
"A single line of code offers a way to understand the cultural context of computing." With 10 different authors collaborating under editor Nick Montfort, this is a fascinating book.
MIT Press is 60 years old this year (2022), and this book is part of the Software Studies series, looking at computer hardware and software in a different light. Other books in this and the related Platform Studies series include Racing The Beam on programming the Atari 2600, and How Pac-Man Eats.
