In stage combat, the names of the sword defenses are given the French names from competitive fencing. Here is an explanation of how those names came about, and why they should NOT be taught to the actors when choreographing a stage fight.
0:44 - "the basic theory" - defending with the sword
1:45 - "the first five" - sword defense in warfare
4:19 - "from blocks to parries" - sword defense in civilian fencing
6:40 - "suit the action to the stage" - how we've modified parries for theatre
7:39 - "where we stand today" - the current naming of the shapes in all its confusing glory
10:26 - "a better way" - a simplified choreographic notation that actually helps actors learn the fight without stress or excess baggage
