Developed by Women at the Table and the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), and adapted from the global AI & Equality Human Rights Toolbox Initiative in collaboration with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), this African version provides practical tools, guidelines, and methodologies to support equitable AI development across Africa.

In this session, Hanna Teshager from Code for Africa examines the landscape of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) across Africa, drawing on research from 11 countries to reveal the narratives, tactics, and systemic patterns of online abuse targeting women and LGBTQ+ communities. The discussion highlights the use of digital platforms for extortion, image-based abuse, doxing, cyberstalking, and gender-based hate speech, as well as the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ disinformation and the weaponization of technology against women in positions of power.

By analyzing case studies from #Ethiopia and #Nigeria, the case study underscores the devastating consequences of AI systems optimized for engagement over dignity, while also pointing to opportunities for designing technical architectures that center human rights, community safety, and inclusive governance.
