The best way to explore the region by public transport is to take a flight to Sapporo (Hokkaido island).
There are numerous options available to find a suitable place to stay around the Furano area where the flower fields abound. I stayed in Asahikawa for two days. This region is really very beautiful in summers, spending some more time here is recommended.
