James P. McCullough, Jr., PhD, an Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology since retirement in 2017, spent his 48-year career at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Jim’s career was divided between doing research with chronic depression, treating chronically depressed patients, and teaching graduate students in VCU’s PhD Clinical Training Program. He developed the only psychotherapy program in the world designed to treat the chronically depressed patient (i.e. persons depressed for more than two years). His treatment program has gained world-wide acceptance in the United States, Europe, and Asia. His diagnostic research also contributed to the acceptance of chronic depression as a distinct diagnostic category in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders (2013). He has written six books and published numerous psychological publications. He continues to write, see patients, and supervise professionals treating chronic patients in the United States and Europe. Dr. McCullough has been married to Rosemary Fleming McCullough for 59 years, and they have three adult children and live in Henrico, Virginia.
