This is a disc I got recently that I’m so happy and relieved to have. My friend @Aces_Archives did a nice thing of noise cancellation and made it sound much better. This is a quite famous 78 from WW2 called dark night or «темная ночь» recorded on CCCP г-11725 in 1943
Mark Bernes (Russian: Марк Бернес) was a beloved Soviet singer and actor, born on October 8, 1911, in Nizhyn, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), and died on August 16, 1969, in Moscow.
Bernes became one of the most iconic voices of World War II in the Soviet Union. His deep, emotional singing style and heartfelt lyrics made him the “voice of the front.” His most famous wartime songs include “Dark Night” (Темная ночь) and “Cranes” (Журавли)—the latter released shortly before his death, and often regarded as a national requiem for fallen soldiers.
He also had a strong film career, appearing in movies like Two Fighters (1943), where he first performed “Dark Night.” His performances always combined warmth, patriotism, and humanity, deeply resonating with the Soviet people.
Bernes died of lung cancer and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. His legacy continues as one of the most emotional and patriotic voices in Russian cultural history.
