Beypore, located in Kozhikkode district, is one of the oldest port towns in Kerala. It was formerly known as Vaypura, Vadaparappanad, and Beydary. Tippu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, named it "Sultan Pattanam".
Beypore port has a rich history of trading with the Middle East. The town is renowned for building wooden ships, particularly dhows or urus, which were used for trading and fishing. Nowadays, these ships are used for tourism.
Captain Iwata, founder member of the Association of Sumerian ships in Japan, believes that Sumerian ships might have been built in Beypore. Beypore had direct trade links with Mesopotamia and was a prominent link on the maritime silk route.
We have created a 10-minute video that explains the construction and details of Uru and includes an interview with the master craftsman.
