Every winter in Venice, thousands of mullets move into the city’s inner canals, forming dense schools clearly visible to the naked eye. This seasonal event usually happens between January and February and has been repeating for years, fascinating both locals and scientists.
According to experts from the Natural History Museum and Ca’ Foscari University, mullets are euryhaline species, meaning they can survive in very different levels of salinity. They migrate from the lagoon’s deeper waters to find shelter from the cold and feed on organic matter.
The fish are not in danger: after a few weeks, they naturally return to the open lagoon. However, researchers believe climate change may be intensifying this behaviour, making it an important signal of how fragile aquatic ecosystems really are.
