I made a rookie mistake setting up my brand new snowboard setup just hours before flying to Japan – and it almost ruined the entire trip. In this video, I'll show you what happens when you forget binding washers, how it affects your ride, and the dirtbag solution I came up with using aluminum foil and Teflon tape when I couldn't find replacement parts.
🏂 THE SETUP DISASTER
New board + new Union step-on bindings + new boots = should be perfect, right? Wrong. I forgot the binding washers during installation and didn't realize it until I was already on the mountain in Japan. The result? Sloppy, unresponsive edge control that made my board feel like a toy.
🔧 THE PROBLEM
Bindings had left-to-right wiggle despite being fully tightened
No responsive edge control with Union step-on system
Japanese rental shop uses cam systems (no individual screws/washers)
Hardware store was 40+ minutes away by bus
Day 2 of my trip was at risk
💡 THE DIRTBAG SOLUTION
When you can't find replacement washers in a foreign country, you improvise. I used the same principle as plumbing repairs – Teflon tape wrapped around binding screws to create a makeshift gasket/washer system. Think of it as creating a custom shim to fill the void and eliminate that binding slop.

🎿 WHY THIS MATTERS
Binding washers might seem like tiny, insignificant hardware, but they're critical for:
✓ Eliminating binding play/slop
✓ Proper edge-to-edge response
✓ Secure connection between binding and board
✓ Overall ride feel and control
📍 JAPAN SNOWBOARDING TIPS
Always set up your gear 1-2 weeks before departure
Bring a complete tool kit and spare hardware
Research local shops before you go (rental shops ≠ hardware availability)
Download translation apps for gear emergencies
🔥 LESSONS LEARNED
1. Never set up brand new gear hours before international travel
2. Washers matter more than you think
3. Teflon tape is a universal problem-solver
4. Stay calm and think creatively when traveling

DISCLAIMER: This temporary solution worked for my situation, but always use proper hardware when possible. Check with binding manufacturers for official replacement parts and installation guidelines.
⚠️ Gear used properly with manufacturer's hardware is always safest. This video shows an emergency field repair, not a permanent solution.
