Oil was first discovered in Oloibiri, Rivers State, in 1956–1958, and thereafter the Niger Delta (including parts of Delta State) became the heart of Nigeria’s oil economy. A. Environmental Damage and Local Grievances

As oil production soared, widespread oil spills, gas flaring, and pollution devastated farmland, water sources, and fisheries — the traditional livelihoods of Niger Delta communities. Locals saw vast wealth leave their lands while they remained poor and underdeveloped.

B. Perceived Marginalization

Many communities — including those in Delta State — felt excluded from decision-making, development projects, and job opportunities. They resented that headquarters and financial powers of oil firms were far from the oil-producing areas.

C. Rising Militancy

From the late 1990s into the 2000s and beyond, local youths formed militant groups — including the Niger Delta Vigilante (NDV), Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and others — that attacked pipelines, kidnapped expatriate workers, and threatened oil installations to demand greater control of resources and community benefits.
