Moto Guzzi California 1100 – Adjusting Magneti Marelli IAW 15M / 15RC Injection Systems
1. Clean throttle bodies housings inside, air bleed screws, flaps, channels and the airbox.
This is very time-consuming and only necessary if the throttle body housings are very dirty.
2. Check fast idle adjustment, unhook it if necessary.
3. Unhook left connecting rod (black plastic arm). Turn back both throttle bodies stop screws with an Allen key.
4. Apply left throttle flap gently against the stop screw with an Allen key. Let the flap snap shut several times (flap closed).
5. Apply right throttle flap gently against the stop screw with an Allen key. Let the flap snap shut several times (flap closed).
6. Set the TPS (throttle position sensor) to approx. 150 mV (+/- 15 mV), and check the voltage with a multimeter (in most cases a Torx wrench is needed). Remove all the yellow sealing paint before.
NOTE: The stop screws should only work as stoppers; they should not have an impact on the throttle position.
To measure the voltage at the throttle position sensor (TPS) you can order e.g. a 109172 TPS Breakout adapter from Casper's Electronics, Inc. (www.casperselectronics.com).
7. Mount left connecting rod (black plastic arm) again. Use a wrench or your fingers to adjust the length via the spring-loaded sync screw (to get a basic adjustment for both sides) with closed flaps when at stop position. The 150 mV must be maintained!
8. Connect GuzziDiag to your ECU (type IAW 15RC or IAW 15M). Set a value of 536 mV (+/- 20 mV) = 3.6° by turning the left stop screw with an Allen key.
Check the voltage value with a multimeter, check the flap position with GuzziDiag.
The stop screw on the right throttle body is without function from now on.
9. Close air bleed screws with a slotted screwdriver
10. Start your engine; let it warm up until its temperature is above 70°C. Synchronize the throttle bodies (with a synchronous tester, e.g. clocks), at 3000 - 4000 rpm. Check the synchronization, and if necessary adjust the spring-loaded sync screw with a wrench or your fingers.
11. Set the idle-running speed to approx. 1100 rpm (check e.g. with GuzziDiag, value “RPM #”) via the air bleed screws with a slotted screwdriver and check the synchronization also here with a synchronous tester, e.g. clocks.
In most cases, the screws must be turned out ½ - 1½ turns.
12. CO Setting:
IAW 15RC ECU (used with catalytic converters since 2003) – Adjusted by the ECU and the Lambda probe.
IAW 15M ECU (used without catalytic converters until 2003) – CO trim can be done via GuzziDiag with running engine (temp. above 70°C), “0” is a good trim value to start with. The CO trim value adds or subtracts a fixed time to the real-time injection pulse-width across the entire rpm range.
Examples:
A CO trim of +1 adds 10 microseconds (µs) to the real-time pulse. A value of +10 adds 100 µs, conversely, a value of -10 will subtract 100 µs.
Usually you should aim for 3-5 % CO idle mixture.
