This band was formed in 1962 as 'The Scorpions' by Francis Rossi (vocals, lead guitar) and Alan Lancester (bass guitar, vocals) with London classmates Jess Jarwoski (keyboard) and Alan Key (drums). Key was replaced in 1963 by John Coghlan and the band re-named themselves to 'The Spectres'. When Rossi, Lancester and Jarwoski left school, Jarwoski left the formation and was replaced by Roy Lynes (who stayed in the band until 1970). They met Rick Parfitt who at that time played for a band called 'The Highlights'. After 3 singles failed to reach the chart they first called themselves 'Traffic' but were forced to rename to 'Traffic Jam' to avoid confusion with Stevie Winwood's band. Then they recruited Parfitt (vocals & rhythm guitar) and named themselves "Status Quo".
They had released the single 'Matchstick Man' just prior to Parfitt's arrival to the band. The song became their only song in the USA to reach the Top 40 of the charts, peaking at #12. But it also became their first Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #7. Their next hit was 'Ice In The Sun' in 1968 which peaked at #8 in their homecountry. But their more psychadelic oriented songs failed on their first album releases and they abandoned these attempts and changed to a more hard rock-ish sound.
But it took a few more albums before they finally hit their breakthrough with 'Piledriver' in 1972. The album peaked at #5 in their homecountry and charted across the world. Their next 4 albums all were certified Gold in the UK and reached at least the Top 2: 'Hello!' (1973), 'On The Level' (1975) and 'Blue For You' (1976) all topped the UK album charts and the single 'Down Down' in 1974 became their first (and only) #1 song in the UK.
The group continued with more successful albums in the late 70s. In 1981 Coghlan left the group and was replaced by Pete Kircher. In 1982 they had their next #1 album in the UK as '1+9+8+2' helped them back to the top.
Then founding member Alan Lancester left the group after an argument about a song he wrote insued. It was settled out-of-court in 1986 as Status Quo continued with the line-up of Rossi, Parfitt, John Edwards (bass), Andy Bown (keyboard & rhythm guitar) & drummer Jeff Rich. They released the album 'In The Army Now' that year and the single with the same name became a #1 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Ireland and peaked at #2 in the UK. The band continued with the same line-ups until 2000. Only the drummer was exchanged until 2016.
In 2016 Parfitt fell ill who suffered a heart attack and had to retire from touring. Unfortunately he passed away at the end of the year from sepsis.
Status Quo has sold over 120 million albums worldwide in their career and here are my favorite 10 songs of this formation, hope you enjoy! What are yours? Write in the comments and discuss this ranking but please keep it civil. No need for insults - they only get you banned, so that won't help anyone. Have a different Top 10? That's fine. Think I missed one of their greatest songs? Tell me. I always read the comments!
