Tradition has it that at the end of a meal among Wagnerians, presided over by Hans von Bülow, Cosima's first husband, the latter, choking with indignation, collapsed on hearing Chabrier attack his Quadrille. Be that as it may, Souvenirs de Munich (dedicated to Antoine Lascoux, a music-loving judge who was the driving force behind the famous 'Petit Bayreuth') illustrates the ambiguity of Chabrier's attitude to the works of Wagner."
