Sailboat racing Day 2 (Sunday) of the epic, annual 'Round The County sailboat race organized by Betsy and the Orcas Island Yacht Club (OIYC.org) from the viewpoint of the mainsheet trimmer on J109 Hravn from Bellingham (BYC.org, cycbellingham.org) Peter F Hallett using my brand new (out of the box en route to the islands!) GoPro Hero11 Mini*.
This was the 35th edition of the 'Round the County, created by local hero Betsy Wareham of West Sound, Orcas, who is generally racing her Martin 242 Purple Martin when not volunteering for race committee.
It is hard to explain the sublime feeling of sailing around the San Juan Islands in November. If you are reading this, you should get onto a boat in 2024!
*(two other GoPro Hero11 Mini's failed me as they lost the ability to charge. This one i charged before i put it away until the next race.)
The J109 is a joy to sail, on this day sailing in the mid 9's and 10 knot speeds when the wind was high. We lost many positions in the race by sailing out on starboard tack into predicted wind and stronger current flowing south down Haro Strait. The boats that sailed close to San Juan Island asap along Lime Kiln Point and short tacked the sore scored big, which is a lesson we continue to relearn.
