Ravel's Pièce en forme de Habanera, an evocative miniature composed in 1907 was originally a "Vocalise-Étude" for voice and piano, inspired by the slow Cuban dance but flavored with Spanish exoticism, featuring the distinctive piano ostinato rhythm, rich vocal-like melodies, and virtuosic elements, showcasing Ravel's mastery of atmosphere and instrumental color. Built on the Spanish-Cuban dance "Habanera", with its characteristic syncopated, ostinato rhythm in the piano's left hand, it combines binary and ternary rhythms, features vocal-like ornamentation like melismas and trills and uses modal harmonies that evoke a hazy, exotic "Oriental" or Spanish feel, rather than strict Iberian tradition. It's a challenging piece both technically and interpretatively with demanding passages for the featured instruments. It's been transcibed for different instruments and now performed for violin, flute, cello, clarinet, trumpet or saxophone.
