The whole spectrum of reproductive problems in both males and females is increasing, and studies show that the rate of infertility is going up. Factors like health issues to lifestyle changes lead to infertility.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in women is one of the many causes of infertility. Dr. Fessy Louis, Consultant and Associate Professor, Amrita Fertility Centre says that PCOS is a condition when ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs. It is a hormonal disorder. About 20% of women between the age of 20 and 30 have PCOS. For many, ovulation may be normal, but lifestyle changes may gradually affect ovulation in these people.
The exact cause of PCOS remains unknown. However, it is found unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, excess insulin, excess weight gain or weight loss, hormone imbalance, and even hereditary factors can contribute to PCOS.
Women with PCOS often experience - irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles, excess facial and body hair, severe acne and male-pattern baldness, and excess male hormone (androgen) levels.
You need to consult an infertility specialist if you are not conceiving after trying to get pregnant for at least one year without using contraceptives.
