Promoting Respect in Maternity Care Through Shared Decision-Making
Presented by: Michele Megregian, CNM, MSN
This presentation is co-hosted by FNU's IHI Open School Chapter and the Right Care Alliance Women's Council
Recent publications have highlighted the ongoing issue of disrespectful care in maternity services. Incidents of obstetric violence can have a lasting effect on mothers and their families as well as maternity care providers. The process of shared decision-making, through an exploration of medical evidence and patient values, is a key component of respectful, patient-centered care. This webinar will review the history and theory of shared decision-making and discuss practical tips for implementing shared decision-making in maternity care.
Michele Megregian, CNM, MSN, is Clinical Assistant Professor at Oregon Health and Science University, School of Nursing, Nurse-Midwifery Academic Program, and practices full-scope midwifery with the faculty practice there. She completed a fellowship in interprofessional health care ethics at the Center for Ethics in Health Care at Oregon Health & Science University and has a certificate in medical ethics from Portland State University. She is currently enrolled in the PhD program in Ethics at Maastricht University, Netherlands, exploring shared decision-making and ethics education for midwifery students.
