ABSTRACT:

ISMPP 2016: ‘Medical publications in a data- rich world: enhancing quality and transparency’ was the largest annual ISMPP to date, with over 500 attendees from over 10 countries. Here’s a summary of the key themes.

Clinical trial data disclosure and transparency. Jenny Sykes, VP, Global Medical Platforms at GSK made the point that expectations for timely access to clinical data by patients and healthcare professionals are not being met. Full data sharing would be the ideal.
The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) proposal for data sharing. This was a lively panel discussion. Hundreds of comments have been received; ICMJE hope to publish recommendations in 2017.
Is the medical journal model fit for purpose? Richard Smith, former editor of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) flagged multiple issues with the current model of medical publishing, including lack of transparency, lack of assurance of data quality, and archeologically slow speed. He proposed a number of radical solutions predicated on an open publication process.
Alternative metrics for measuring publication impact. The National Information Standards Organisation (NISO) are developing technical standards for assessing altmetrics. Publication anticipated in 2017.
Social media and enhanced journal content for scientific publications. Journals are increasingly offering rich media content to supplement published articles, but uptake is slow. Augmented reality, e.g. using the Blippar app to scan poster elements, is one approach for accelerating access to enhanced content.
Publication planning for real-world evidence (RWE), health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), rare diseases and biosimilars were key workshop themes.
