This video captures the rarely seen first step in creating an HOe narrow gauge layout —
the marking and planning process before any rails are laid.

Filmed at the Narrow Gauge Shop workshop in Japan,
it shows how the flow of the track is determined and how the placement of structures such as stations and engine sheds is planned directly on the baseboard.
This “marking” stage is where the layout truly takes shape.
The design pays homage to the legendary Egger-Bahn layouts of the 1960s,
blending that classic German narrow gauge style with the delicate craftsmanship of Japan’s iconic Joe Works structures.
Every line is drawn by hand — a quiet process that bridges eras and celebrates the art of small-scale model railways.
We hope this video offers inspiration for your next layout build.
