How to Use your Campervans Pop Top Roof

Pop Top roofs are extremely simple to use and allow for a generous amount of headroom for you to roam freely around your campervan.

At Platinum Wave Automotive, we offer two types of canvas's for your pop top, one being the standard canvas and the other being a scenic canvas which you can unzip to gain a 360 view.

The first question you may be asking is how do you open the pop top roof? It's really simple and easy to do! All you have to do is loosen the two straps at the front of the van and then push. It's as simple as that.

How do you get up into the pop top roof? Most campervans will come with a front swivel seat which you can turn around to face inside the campervan. Once this is rotated you can use it as a step to help push yourself up into the pop top. The space between the seat and the pop top bed board is around 2.5-3 ft so the majority of people don’t struggle to get up into it and as you can see from the video, there’s plenty of space to lie down and sleep in.

Can you drive with the pop top roof up? In short the answer is no. Pop top roofs aren't designed to withstand high winds and movement from driving, especially at speed. Doing so can cause the mechanisms to fail. Even just moving your vehicle several metres with the pop top up can cause the gas struts to fail meaning you’ll need to replace them.

If you're wondering how to put your pop top roof down, it's just as easy as putting it up. Firstly, lower the bed board if it is raised, then using the two handles at the top of the pop top, pull the roof down. Before fully lowering the roof, we advice that you pull the canvas in entirely to prevent creasing and rips of the canvas. Then simply secure the roof with the two straps at the front of the van.

Top tip: Always leave the sliding door open when lowering the pop top to allow the excess air to escape. Failing to do so can result in damage to the pop top canvas.
