Dante's View is one of the most famous scenic overlooks in Death Valley National Park and it is fairly easy to access. The road to this destination is located a few miles east of Furnace Creek on Highway 190 and the signage is easy to spot. This side road is paved and there is a large parking area on site. However, the final leg to the top of the mountain is a steep grade with tight turns, so those who drive large RV campers or trailers may have to park and hike to the end point.
At the end of the line is Dante's View, which is perched atop Coffin Peak about a mile above the floor of Death Valley. The panoramic views of Death Valley from this lofty overlook are nothing less than spectacular. This vantage point offers easy access for physically challenged visitors, so practically anybody can enjoy this famous overlook. A picnic area is located nearby, so spending extra time with friends and family is easy to do. Better still, there is a foot path that goes to a mountain top spot that offers unobstructed views with Death Valley way down below. Dante's View is one of the most famous scenic overlooks in the entire west, so be sure to chalk this one up when doing the grand tour!
Zabriskie Point is one of the most popular scenic overlooks in Death Valley National Park and this spot is easy to access. Zabriskie Point is located on Highway 190 just a few miles east of Furnace Creek and there is a large parking area with basic facilities. Twenty Mule Team Canyon is right next door, so both of these destinations can be explored during a short day trip. Zabriskie Point does require a short uphill hike to the viewing area and there are several foot trails that go to interesting vantage points, so it goes without saying that the cool weather seasons are best for visiting this destination.
Erosive forces have sculpted the colorful landscape at Zabriskie Point over eons of time to create a mesmerizing badlands area that borders upon the surreal. This scenic area is composed of massive ancient dry wash deposits, volcanic ash tuff, sedimentary bedrock and mineral rich outcrops, so the colorful earth tones certainly are a feast for the eyes. The rolling wave texture of this eroded landscape captivates all who lay eyes upon this unique terrain, so be prepared to spend more time than initially planned to take it all in. The sunrise and sunset hours accent this vivid landscape in an indescribable way that simply must be experienced in person. For this reason, be sure to note that arriving during the blue hour before dawn or the golden hour before sunset will reveal memorable views that landscape artists worldwide crave to experience!
