Dick Metz, born in Laguna Beach in 1929, is a 2023 Surf Pioneer recognized for his profound impact on the worldwide surfing lifestyle and culture. Raised in the heart of Southern California's early surf scene, Metz surfed alongside legends at San Onofre and co-founded the iconic Hobie Surf Shop in Dana Point in 1954, setting the standard for surf shops globally. His travels as an adventurous surfer led him to the discovery of Cape St. Francis, later immortalized in *The Endless Summer*. From running surf shops in Hawaii to establishing the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC), Metz's contributions have shaped the evolution of surfing from a local subculture into a global movement.
