As the USS Enterprise encounters heavy subspace interference, Lieutenant Palmer receives a distress signal from the starship "Constellation." Investigating, they find the Constellation in ruins, its crew missing. Commodore Decker, the sole survivor, reveals they were attacked by a planet killer, an ancient automated weapon consuming entire planets for fuel. Despite Decker's attempts to destroy it, the planet killer returns, threatening the Enterprise. Spock assumes command after Decker's irrational actions, but Decker sacrifices himself in a final attempt to stop the planet killer. Kirk devises a plan to overload the Constellation's engines within the planet killer, destroying it. Despite technical difficulties and Kirk's narrow escape, the plan succeeds, and the Enterprise escapes unharmed, with Spock recording Decker's sacrifice in the line of duty.
