Imagine a great empire without a sultan for eleven years.
In 1402, Sultan Bayezid I was defeated and captured at the Battle of Ankara, throwing the Ottoman state into chaos. With no clear ruler, his four sons—Süleyman, İsa, Musa, and Mehmed—claimed the throne.
For eleven brutal years, the Ottomans fought each other.
The empire was divided between Anatolia and the Balkans, old enemies returned, and the Ottoman Empire came close to collapse.
The civil war finally ended on July 5, 1413, when Mehmed Çelebi became Sultan Mehmed I, reunifying the empire and saving it from destruction.
