Why “sometimes” matters in autism and toddler development

This one word changes how professionals interpret autism in toddlers.
When parents say, “they only do it sometimes,” that detail matters more than most people realize.
Autism doesn’t show up as random moments. It shows up as patterns that stay the same, even when a child is calm and regulated.
Behaviors that:
• disappear with rest, comfort, or routine
• improve once a child is regulated
usually mean something very different than behaviors that:
• show up across settings
• persist across days
• stay the same even during calm moments
You can see the same behavior in two children, but the pattern around it, especially whether it changes when they’re calm, is what actually gives it meaning.
