New York City... Right around the turn of the century... it was common for apartments to have bedrooms built on top of each other with very thin floors. Another commonality was hearing the upstairs neighbor take off one shoe... drop it, and then of course repeat the process with the other side. This would leave downstairs neighbors “waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

This was the birth of an American expression – signifying “anticipation of things to come.” And THAT, leads us to our topic today.

There's days where I wake up on the proverbial “right side of the bed.” There's a bounce in my step. Music sounds amazing. I'm productive, optimistic, social, sexual, playful, and I feel connected to others. These days can be a nice break from the depression, agitation, and paranoia that goes along with my illness.

As my self-awareness has grown, I started to notice these little fears that would taint the good days. I'd be out with friends, and start to worry about enjoying my time... I was afraid of possible hypomania progressing into full blown mania. I was afraid that the good moments wouldn't last. I was also afraid of the depressive fallout if I went to high. These are super valid concerns – and they often prevented me from enjoying my life to the fullest.

So I guess the big question is... How do we cultivate a healthy sense of caution... Where we can enjoy life, but still know when there are signs of trouble?
