William Faulkner tried to keep his private life as private as possible – but he had several love affairs over the course of his life: There was his wife Estelle of course, even though she married someone else before him – but it was a difficult relationship, they both drinking and Estelle never really took much interest in his work.
There was Helen Baird in New Orleans, to whom he wrote poems, dedicated his novel, and proposed marriage, but she declined.
In Hollywood he met divorcee Meta Carpenter who he felt saved his life and stopped him going mad. He kept saying he would leave his wife for her, but just couldn’t and she got tired of waiting.
In his fifties, he met 20 year old aspiring writer Joan Williams and was devastated when she put an end to their affair.
And finally Jean Stein – a 19 year old writer who interviewed him for a magazine.
But the biggest love in Faulkner’s life was always his writing.
