If you haven’t seen us before we’re Ben and Sarah from Pack Lunch and Travel – taking you with us in search of waterfalls round the world, one road trip at a time. In this video we’ll share our favourite day trips in the 4 countries of the UK and some other honourable mentions to hopefully give you some ideas for your own travels.
Our favourite daytrip in Wales so far is also up there on the list for favourite EVER days and that’s down to these little birds – the puffins and one of their top breeding spots of Skomer Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire. The island is only open for visiting between April and August and from our experience, April and early May, when the puffins are laying their eggs is a brilliant time to go. It would be hard to find a better up close wildlife encounter than this anywhere, and the puffins are so much fun to watch as they go in and out of their burrows and fly off to feed.
One of our favourite loop walks is in Wales too and is well worth a mention here – the Aber Falls trail takes you up to the falls and then through beautiful landscape with brilliant views that change as you go round.
Our favourite day in Scotland so far was the in Galloway Forest Park on a route starting with a visit to Kenmure Castle, then to the Red Deer Range and finishing with a brilliant walk starting from Black Loch to see two small but beautiful waterfalls – Rosie’s Waterfall and Grey Mare’s Tail, with amazing views over the landscape in between. We’d booked a great cabin stay in Newton Stewart for this trip which added to the experience of this beautiful part of the country.
Other top places worth mentioning in Scotland are the Isle of Skye with a stop at Eilean Donan Castle and the Cairngorms National Park where we had one of the best AirBnB stays we’ve ever had watching red squirrels from the window.
The North Pennines in England gave us one epic day that started our love of finding waterfalls. The High Force, Low Force and Summerhill Force waterfall walks are close enough together to be easily done in one day. Starting our day at the High Force Hotel quite early meant we found an alternative to the regular ticketed path which wasn’t open yet, and was not only a lovely walk and a great view of the waterfall, but also free. We then drove the short distance to Bowlees Visitor centre for the walk to Summerhill Force and from there to the Low Force.
Two other areas of England we love are the Lake District and Northumberland National Park, both with a number of great walks and waterfalls, a couple of honourable mentions are Rydal Cave in the Lake District and Hareshaw Linn in the Northumberland.
One day in Northern Island can cover 3 very popular attractions, the Dark Hedges the Giant’s Causeway and the brilliant Carrick A Rede with the very fun rope bridge walk. We spent a brilliant day here seeing all 3, starting early with the Dark Hedges to get that all important picture with no one around, and leaving plenty of time to carefully navigate the rope bridge in slightly breezy conditions.
Another great walk to mention here is the Cranny Falls, an easy trail to a proper viewing platform for the falls which feel a bit like a hidden gem, tucked away in the rock of the old quarry and the coast road nearby is a spectacular drive all on its own.
