Kyoto Station
is Japan's second-largest station building and the primary transportation gateway to the city. Beyond its role as a transit hub, it is a 15-story futuristic "city within a city" featuring a massive shopping mall, a luxury hotel, a movie theater, and numerous dining zones.
Key Station Areas
The station is divided into two distinct sides connected by a 2nd-floor pedestrian walkway and an underground passage:
Karasuma Side (North): Faces downtown and the iconic Kyoto Tower. This side houses the main bus terminal for city sightseeing and the JR Central Gate.
Hachijo Side (South): The quieter side, providing direct access to the Shinkansen (bullet train) platforms and the private Kintetsu Railway.
Transportation Hub
Kyoto Station connects several major rail and bus networks:
JR Lines: Serves the Tokaido Shinkansen (to Tokyo/Osaka), the Haruka Express (to Kansai Airport), and local lines to Arashiyama (Sagano Line), Nara, and Fushimi Inari.
Subway: The Karasuma Line runs north-south through central Kyoto, stopping at Shijo and Karasuma Oike.
Kintetsu Railway: Convenient for travel to Nara and Mie Prefecture.
Bus Terminal: Located at the Karasuma exit, it is the main hub for city buses to major temples like Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera.
Architecture & Highlights
Designed by Hiroshi Hara, the station is an avant-garde masterpiece of glass and steel.
The Matrix: A massive exposed steel-beamed roof over the central atrium.
Skyway: A glass-walled tunnel 45 meters above the main hall offering panoramic city views.
Grand Staircase: A 171-step staircase that often features LED light displays at night.
Sky Garden: A free rooftop terrace providing 360-degree views of Kyoto and the surrounding mountains.
Shopping & Dining
Kyoto Ramen Koji (10F): A dedicated "Ramen Street" featuring regional styles from across Japan.
JR Kyoto Isetan: A 10-story department store with a popular basement food hall for souvenirs and bento boxes.
Porta & The Cube: Extensive underground shopping and dining areas directly connected to the station and subway.
