For the first time since the late 1990s, a Southern Mogul could be seen gracing the main line metals of the National Network, as U Class No.31806 - Herself having not ran on the main line since withdrawal from BR service in January 1964 - worked a loaded test run from Swanage to Yeovil Junction, via Weymouth, and back. The load for this run would be five of the Swanage Railway's own green Mk1s and Class 33 No.D6515 'Lt Jenny Lewis RN', who would be used both as ballast weight and for towing the stock plus 31806 on certain sections.
In this short video, we see 31806 raising the echoes, up the fearsome 1 in 52 climb of Upwey Bank, with the equivalent of load eight on the drawbar! I had two other shots planned either side of this one but, sadly, these didn't work out. However, as the climb of Upwey Bank was the main attraction for me, it was still definitely worth the trip down to Dorset!
Filmed on a Panasonic VXF990 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
