During the first half of the 1980s, a certain clean-cut British decathlete was winning almost every competition he entered. His name was Daley Thompson, and he won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and would go on to repeat this feat at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Thompson broke the world record for the event four times. He was unbeaten in competition for nine years. With four world records, two Olympic gold medals, three Commonwealth titles and wins in the World and European Championships, Thompson is considered by many to be the greatest decathlete of all time

I mean Daley Thompson was a legend in the UK. He appeared in TV adverts for Lucozade, chats shows...he was everywhere. He was a god.

Now. The 1980s was also the time when video games were undergoing a revolutionary transformation, capturing the imaginations of a generation and laying the groundwork for the immersive experiences we enjoy today. This gaming revolution also coincided perfectly with Thompson’s peak popularity and so in 1986 Ocean Software decided to capitalise on the athlete’s success by releasing a home computer game. The aptly titled Daley Thompson’s Decathlon became an instant hit among sports enthusiasts and became one of the biggest-selling games of 1984, winning numerous awards and breaking many joysticks in the process.

A second game, Daley Thompson's Super-Test, was then released the following year and then a the third title, Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge, was released in 1988 to coincide with the 1988 Olympic Games.
