Newmarket is a central Auckland suburb which was originally an independent borough from 1885 to 1989, when it was abolished.
Newmarket was established as a livestock market since the 1850s and grew to become a retail and commercial centre for Auckland, with the main road Broadway being the focal point of this activity.
I lived near here from 1976 to 1981, at that time it was an area dominated by small shops and businesses with quite a strong Polynesian flavour. In the intervening years it has become an upmarket shopping area with many restaurants and clothing retailers. In the last decade a huge Westfield Mall has been established at the southern end of the Main Street which to be honest I find hard to navigate.
