To get started all you need is a gallon waterer, tray feeder, heat lamp and a warm place to put your chicks. I use the enclosed part of my chicken tractor, you can also use a large box for the first week or two in the garage but you will need to find a bigger place for them like a shed or even a dog house just make sure it has a door on it.

You will need an extension cord for your light. It's not super essential but you can get a timer that will turn the light on during the night and off during the day. This is nice as it gets hotter. Get a heat bulb and lamp to keep your chicks warm and dry.

Once you have these things you are ready to get your chicks. I usually purchase my chicks in May since it is warmer weather. I get Cornish Rocks but there are several meat breeds out there. If you are getting them at a local store you will have to stick with what they have. If you are ordering them online then you can choose a from a couple of different breeds.

While you are at the store get a bag of chicken starter grower. I usually start my chicks on one bag of this because it is medicated. It doesn’t have antibiotics but will prevent your chicks from getting coccidiosis. Once I finish this bag I will switch over to buying feed in bulk.

Make sure your meat chicks always have plenty of clean water. I use a gallon waterer until the chicks get bigger then I will switch to a larger waterer. Charlotte likes to help me a lot.

Again all you need is a waterer, food tray, heat lamp and a good place to keep them warm and dry. Once the chicks get bigger and more crowded I will let them start venturing down into the lower part of the chicken tractor. I try and clean the pen once a week because the poop will get the chicks wet. Warm and dry is the key.
