A ghost of an echo 50 years to the day
His tiny feet planted right here on the porch
My father and his brothers
In the fields and orchards
In their childish dreams

It was 1926, Papa was doing so well
He picked a great spot in Jerusalem
He christened the house Villa Harun ar-Rashid
Painted tiles with that name
To this day remain
Though the writing has faded
From both malice and time

And I stand here, with my wife and my kids
The pain is written all over my face
“You never lived here” he keeps saying to me
It’s the home my papa built

Now it’s 1933
Hard times fell on the family
Papa had no choice
But to rent it out
To some British officers
And my family moved into a smaller house

Papa moved to Cairo looking for work
Never selling the house, hoping to return
Then came the Haganah, they drove everyone out
The British gave them the keys
The title and the deed
The theft made legal
By new property laws

And Helen Mirren played Golda Meir
Who lived in the house in the 60s
“You don’t exist” she said to my people
While living in the home my papa built

The walls of a home, they never forget
They see us in our worst moments, they see us in our best
3/4 of a million stories just like mine
And more chapters are written
Even as I sit here singing
They can try to diminish us
But the homes know the score

All we are asking is to go home
