ঐতিহাসিক স্থাপনাটি ষষ্ঠ শতাব্দীতে বাইজেন্টাইন সম্রাট প্রথম জাস্টিনিয়ানের নির্দেশে নির্মিত । ৯১৬ বছর প্রাচীনপন্থি ও রোমান ক্যাথলিক খ্রিস্টানরা হায়া সোফিয়ায় উপাসনা করে । প্রায় এক হাজার বছর ধরে এটিই ছিল পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় গির্জা । ১৪৫৩ সালে, অটোমান সুলতান মুহাম্মদ ফতেহ ইস্তাম্বুল দখলে নিয়ে হায়া সোফিয়া ব্যক্তিগত অর্থে কিনে নেন ।
গির্জার খ্রিস্টান প্রতিকৃতিগুলো কুরআনের আয়াতে ঢেকে স্থাপনাটিকে মসজিদে রূপান্তরিত করেন তিনি । ইসলামের পতাকা উত্তোলন করে প্রথম জুমার নামাজ আদায় করেন সুলতান মুহাম্মদ ফতেহ । সেই থেকে ঐতিহাসিক এই মসজিদে ৪শ' ৮১ বছর নামাজ আদায় করেছেন মুসল্লিরা । ১৯২৪ সালে কামাল আতাতুর্ক খেলাফত উচ্ছেদ করে ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ রাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। প্রায় ৫শ' বছর মসজিদ হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হওয়ার পর ১৯৩৪ সালে হায়া সোফিয়াকে জাদুঘরে রূপান্তরিত করা হয় । ১৯৮৫ সালে হায়া সোফিয়াকে বিশ্ব-ঐতিহ্যের তালিকায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত করে ইউনেস্কো । তুরস্কের সর্বাধিক দর্শনীয় স্থানগুলোর মধ্যে এটি অন্যতম । গম্বুজশোভিত এই বিশাল ঐতিহাসিক ভবনটি খুব সহজেই দর্শকদের নজর কাড়ে । প্রায় ৮৬ বছর হায়া সোফিয়া ছিল জাদুঘর । আবারও মসজিদে রুপান্তরিত হলেও হায়া সোফিয়া উন্মুক্ত থাকবে দেশি-বিদেশি পর্যটকদের জন্য

The historic installation was built in the sixth century under the direction of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. 917-year-old Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians worship Hagia Sophia. It was the largest church in the world for almost a thousand years. In 1453, the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad conquered Istanbul and bought Hagia Sophia for personal gain.
He converted the Christian portraits of the church into mosques by covering them with verses from the Qur'an. Sultan Muhammad Fateh performed the first Friday prayers by hoisting the flag of Islam. Since then, the worshipers have been praying in this historic mosque for 471 years. In 1924, Kemal Atatুrk overthrew the caliphate and established a secular state.
Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1934 after being used as a mosque for about 500 years. In 1975, Hagia Sophia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of the most scenic places in Turkey. This huge historic building with domes easily catches the eye of the visitors. Hagia Sophia was a museum for about 7 years. Even if it is converted into a mosque again, Hagia Sophia will remain open for domestic and foreign tourists.
