Is the New Food Pyramid an Improvement?

One of the biggest changes in the new Dietary Guidelines is the shift away from MyPlate to an updated, upside-down pyramid.
And while the new model does some things well — like emphasizing higher protein, more fruits and vegetables, and limiting added sugars and ultra-processed foods — it also changes how people are expected to apply the guidance.
MyPlate worked because it helped visualize what a balanced meal should look like. It gave simple, practical structure at each meal, not just across the entire day. It made sure people knew how to be satisfied after each sitting while hitting their nutrient needs.
The new pyramid moves the focus back to total daily intake, which may work for some, but it still leaves ambiguity when it comes to meals... but don't get me wrong -- it’s absolutely an improvement over the old pyramid that was phased out 15 years ago.
But here’s why this matters:
Most people don’t eat nutrients — they eat meals.
When meals aren’t balanced, energy, recovery, and hunger usually suffer. Daily balance is important, but for many people, meal-by-meal structure is what actually makes healthy eating sustainable.
Guidelines can be helpful — how they’re applied is what really counts.
What are your thoughts?
