🏛️ Interesting Facts About the Area
The Financial District is the oldest settled part of Manhattan. What is now one of the world's most important financial centers began as the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in the early 1600s.
Today the neighborhood is home to Wall Street, major financial institutions, historic landmarks, and some of the most recognizable skyscrapers in New York City.
The Oculus was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2016. Its design was inspired by a bird being released into flight and has become one of the city's most photographed modern structures.
The building contains more steel than the Eiffel Tower and serves as a transportation hub connecting PATH trains, subway lines, shopping areas, and the World Trade Center complex.
The 9/11 Memorial occupies the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The two reflecting pools are the largest man-made waterfalls in North America and are surrounded by the names of nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Fulton Street is one of Lower Manhattan's oldest streets and has connected the East River waterfront with the heart of the city for centuries.
The entire World Trade Center district represents one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in American history, transforming the area into a center of business, transportation, public space, and remembrance.
At night, the illuminated towers, memorial lighting, and reflections across glass facades create some of the most dramatic city views anywhere in Manhattan.
