We are certainly still some ways away from Thailand getting an F1 race, but plans have some significant momentum behind them. In fact, the real question seems to be not if Thailand gets an F1 race but where it will be located.
Those hoping for a Bangkok circuit that winds it away around the city’s famous temples shouldn’t get their hopes up. While that has long been mulled as the location, a recent pivot to another site means racing won’t come to the streets of the Thai capital.
Quite frankly, that’s probably for the best. So, where will Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and friends potentially be revving their engines?
In the past year or so, rumblings occurred that an F1 race was back on Thailand’s agenda as the country’s new government looking for ways to boost the country’s tourism appeal. Speculation became even more rampant when the Thai Prime Minister was spotted walking the grid at Imola.
The general though process was that Thailand would be dusting off those Bangkok plans for a grand prix circuit. Instead, they made a hard left turn to a different location altogether. U-Tapao International Airport.
On the surface, it was seen as a curious decision. However, it does make some sense when you think about it. Oh yeah, let’s talk about the location since it is likely to be unfamiliar to many of you out there.
Occasionally called U-Tapao–Rayong–Pattaya International Airport, this facility is located along Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard. The closest major city is Pattaya while Bangkok is roughly 90 miles away. Right now though, there isn’t a lot out there. It is just an old Navy airport but that is changing.
It is currently being revamped into an aviation hub and what is being called the “Eastern Airport City”, a huge project to expand the airport and build a bunch of other stuff out there including a soccer stadium.
Now a Formula 1 circuit could finally allow the Thailand Grand Prix to become a reality.
