Playthrough of Irem's 1991 side-scrolling shoot 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Super R-Type.
Super R-Type is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Irem for the Super Nintendo in 1991, serving as a partial port and enhanced version of R-Type II with exclusive content. Players take control of the R-9 space fighter, tasked with defending humanity from the evil Bydo Empire in a series of intense, side-scrolling battles across deep space and alien-infested landscapes.
The game retains the core R-Type mechanics, including the signature "Force" pod, which can be attached to the front or back of the ship for both offensive and defensive capabilities. Players can also charge their primary weapon for a powerful beam attack and collect various power-ups, including lasers, homing missiles, and shielding orbs. Unlike its arcade counterpart, Super R-Type features redesigned levels, new enemy patterns, and an exclusive stage, adding fresh challenges for returning players.
One of the game’s most notable aspects is its impressive graphics and sound design, which take full advantage of the SNES hardware. The game features detailed sprite work, parallax scrolling, and a moody, atmospheric soundtrack that enhances the intensity of battle. However, Super R-Type is infamous for its lack of mid-stage checkpoints, meaning players must restart from the beginning of a level upon losing all their lives, making it one of the more punishing entries in the series.
Despite its brutal difficulty and occasional slowdown due to the SNES hardware limitations, Super R-Type remains a beloved title among shoot 'em up fans, offering a visually striking and challenging experience that stays true to the classic R-Type formula.
