V.S. Achuthanandan, Veteran Communist and Former Kerala Chief Minister, Passes Away at 101

V.S. Achuthanandan, a titan of Kerala politics, freedom fighter, and former Chief Minister, has passed away in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 101. A foundational leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the leader popularly known as "V.S." had withdrawn from public life in 2019 after suffering a stroke.

His political identity was forged in the crucible of hardship. Born into poverty in Alappuzha in 1923 and orphaned at a young age, he began his political odyssey at 16, joining the resistance against feudal landlords and colonial rule. Mentored by the pioneering communist P. Krishna Pillai, he organized agricultural and factory workers, leading to his involvement in the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising of 1946. After the agitation, he went into hiding but was eventually arrested and brutally tortured in custody, an ordeal he survived after police left him for dead.

A founding member of the CPI(M) in 1964, Achuthanandan’s career was marked by his unshakeable ideological convictions and a willingness to challenge his own party. This defiance led to his expulsion from the party's Politburo in 2009. In a move that epitomized his maverick nature, he visited the home of the slain dissident T.P. Chandrasekharan's widow in 2012, defying a party directive.

As Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and as a crusading Leader of the Opposition, V.S. was a relentless champion for the marginalized. He spearheaded uphill public causes, including environmental protection, wetland conservation, gender equality, and the rights of transgender people and nurses. His distinctive oratory delivered in a rustic cadence filled with biting sarcasm and hard-hitting humour made him a magnet for crowds and a legend in Kerala's public sphere.

V.S. Achuthanandan is survived by his wife, K. Vasumathy, their two children, V. A. Arunkumar and V. V. Asha, and his grandchildren.
