what i have for you today is a simpson
strong tie hurricane strap
this is a device that we use to secure
the roof rafters to the top of our walls
and the house
and we don't do it with this any
ordinary nails like these or one of the
framing nails which you're probably
familiar with but this special one here
this is called a tico nail as you can
see it's much bigger than the regular
framing nail next to it and this is what
we call gives it shear strength
so we use five of those on one side
five of those on the other
and we install them
up here on the roof
and you can see what that does it holds
the top for the walls
onto the roof trusses
so when hurricane ida or any of her
friends come up
we don't have that windshear to pick up
these roof rafters
and send them down the street
thanks to the simpsons strong tie
