The Historic Red Bridge is a pedestrian-only bridge in South Meriden, Connecticut, spanning the Quinnipiac River. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it serves as the entrance to the Quinnipiac River Gorge Trail and is a rare surviving example of a lenticular truss bridge.
Construction: Built in 1891 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company to replace an earlier wooden structure that was also painted red.
Structure: It is a single-span wrought iron lenticular pony truss bridge, measuring 82 feet long and resting on brownstone abutments.
Rarity: Of more than 100 such bridges once built in Connecticut, it is one of fewer than 20 that remain today.
Preservation: The bridge was bypassed for vehicular traffic in the 1960s or 1970s and underwent major restorations by the Meriden Lions Club in 2002 and again in 2018.
