Indian Navy Rejects HAL’s LUH, Says It Fails Maritime Standards | From Chetak to NUH | Helicopters

Описание: The Indian Navy has officially ruled out the induction of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), confirming that the platform does not meet the Navy’s stringent maritime operational standards. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi stated that after a detailed evaluation, the LUH failed to satisfy key Naval Qualitative Requirements (QRs), leading to the decision to drop it from future procurement plans.
While the LUH has been accepted by the Indian Army and Indian Air Force for land-based roles, naval operations demand specialised capabilities. According to reports, the helicopter faced limitations in corrosion resistance against saltwater environments, payload capacity, endurance, and safety margins required for sustained operations over open seas.
With the LUH out of contention, the Indian Navy continues to operate the ageing Chetak helicopter fleet, which has served as a backbone of naval aviation since 1966. The Ministry of Defence has now issued a Request for Information (RFI) for 76 Naval Utility Helicopters (NUH) for both the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, signalling the search for a modern replacement.
