Ivona Kaminska-Bowlby performs Handel's Capriccio in G minor, HWV 483
from the performer:
Capriccio in G minor by G.F. Handel evokes a sense of polyphonic sophistication similar to Bach’s Two-Part Inventions. Handel’s Capriccio, written in a two-part polyphonic style, opens with a clear presentation of its characteristic subject in the right hand from measures 1 to 4. As with other imitative works, it is crucial for the performer to project the main subject with clarity.
Set in common time, the piece emphasizes a strong projection on each downbeat and a significant emphasis on the third beat of each measure. When practicing at a slower tempo, performers should focus on the strong and weak pairings of eighth and sixteenth notes. This approach enhances rhythmic control and supports a more precise performance at faster tempos.
Distinct from Bach’s typical two-part writing, the final page of this piece introduces a more improvisatory style, reminiscent of fantasias rather than inventions. From measure 27 onwards, Handel explores a more capricious and free treatment of the right-hand material, leading to dissonant and whimsical gestures that benefit from considerable rhythmic freedom.
The Affekt of this piece conveys energetic, passionate, and intense emotions, demanding exceptionally clear and distinct articulation of all notes.
