The government has decided to dissolve 31 redundant or overstaffed public agencies, restructure 18, and merge 6 others as part of an effort to improve administrative efficiency and governance. This initiative is expected to save the state approximately 20 billion rupees.
The entities targeted include various development committees, boards, funds, and authorities that were deemed unproductive or had overlapping roles. Some notable examples of dissolved agencies include the Railway Board, the Urban Area Public Transport Authority, the Trade and Export Promotion Center, the National Dairy Development Board, and several infrastructure and development committees.
Additionally, the restructuring plan includes efforts to streamline the management of health science academies, such as the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, under a unified act. Some agencies, like the Insect-borne Disease Research and Training Center, have been merged into relevant departmental divisions (e.g., the Epidemiology Division of the Ministry of Health).
This move follows long-standing recommendations from various commissions to reduce unnecessary administrative burdens and achieve financial discipline within the public sector.
