In this video, I am taking you along on Day 1 of our New Zealand South Island road trip, and we are starting our journey from Christchurch to one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand which is Lake Tekapo.

This is the beginning of my New Zealand road trip adventure, and I am sharing everything with you from practical travel tips to the most stunning scenic views along the way.

If you are renting a car in New Zealand, most rental companies give you the car with a full tank, and when you return it, you must return it full as well otherwise you will be charged extra. So I am sharing that little tip to save you money.

I am also talking about why you should download Google offline maps before starting your South Island road trip. There are remote stretches between Christchurch and Lake Tekapo where you might lose signal, so having offline navigation is super helpful.

Before heading out, I grab a quick takeaway breakfast from a fuel station, a toasty and a classic NZ pie that you have to try when you come to New Zealand.

The drive from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo is around three hours, but in this video, I explain why it can take longer. Once the scenery starts changing, you’ll feel like stopping again and again. Snow-capped mountains, wide open landscapes, and those unreal blue tones everywhere.

In the beginning of the drive, we actually did not stop much because we did not come across any dramatic viewpoints yet. But as we continued further, the views started getting better and better. I am showing you the scenic South Island drive, the changing landscapes, our first glimpses of those snowy mountain peaks and the first look at the wild lupins that I actually planned this trip for.

We do a quick stop to soak in the views, take it all in, and I show you around before continuing toward Lake Tekapo.

And then we finally arrive at Lake Tekapo, famous for being one of the bluest lakes in New Zealand. The colour of the water honestly does not look real. That stunning turquoise shade is caused by glacial flour, and seeing it in person is even more surreal than in photos.

I am also showing you the famous Church of the Good Shepherd area, one of the most photographed tourist hotspots in New Zealand. I show you how busy the area gets and how popular it is with visitors. If you are planning a Christchurch to Queenstown road trip, this is one of those must-stop places people always include.

You will also see a little glimpse of the lupins around the lake but I will be sharing more of that in the next video 😉

At the end of the day, I am say good bye to head to check into my accommodation, freshen up, grab something to eat, and end the vlog there as we get ready for the next part of the journey.
