LETE, MUSTANG DISTRICT, NEPAL, September 29, 2026 — Pilgrims on the road to Jomsom filmed a large section of mountainside breaking away and pouring into the Kali Gandaki River on Sunday. The collapse took about six seconds and briefly dammed the river in one of the most extreme gorges on Earth.

The same storm killed at least 24 people across Nepal and left 14 missing, according to tallies reported Monday, while an avalanche at the Himlung Himal base camp left four dead and 12 missing. It comes one month after the Langtang collapse left more than 1,400 people dead.

Five days before the footage was shot, officials downstream had already warned in writing that this river could rise without notice. The slopes above it are still soaked, and the monsoon has not left yet.
