Islamabad is facing widespread criticism after large-scale tree cutting in key green areas like Shakarparian, Garden Avenue, F-9 Park, and residential sectors stirred public anger and environmental concerns.
Reports say thousands of trees — mainly paper mulberry — were removed in a campaign led by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and federal health authorities to reduce pollen allergies.
Officials claim the removals were science-based and targeted specific allergenic species, with plans to plant three indigenous trees for every tree cut.
However, residents, environmentalists, and social media users are demanding transparency, citing loss of natural beauty and ecological balance.
After massive public backlash, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the issue and requested a detailed report from CDA on the tree cutting approvals and mitigation plans.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also launched investigations into the removals.
