Conspiracy Theorists unite! The date was September 16, 2018 and 4 skeptical fisherman set out on a 40 mile, early morning ride to Block Island. Approximately, 1 or 2 miles past the Ruins with Gardiners Island to the South and approximately 200 yards behind the boat, two silver shaped long fish jumped sky high out of the water. These were not blues or stripers. Were they tarpon (my first thought)? Were they sturgeon? Neither fish is typically found in these Gardiner Bay waters but stories of Tarpon being caught in gill nets close to Gardiners Island were reported. Further, Sturgeon, have been known to be acrobats when feeding.
Alas, since camera was not rolling when this occurred, we’ll probably never know. Have you ever seen or experienced anything like this?
Hope you enjoy the rest of the video which will hopefully wet everyone’s appetite for the opening of fluke (flounder) season in a few short weeks (May 4, 2019 in NYS).
All thanks again to Captain Rick Kohut for putting us on the fish!
